May 30, 2009 - Dragon Boat Festival

Springbrook Park -  813 Brewster Road, Alcoa, TN

3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

This year's FCC Dragon Boat celebration will be held at Alcoa's Springbrook Park. This park has a playground, covered picnic area and a great creek where we can float boats. We will have a contest for dragon boats created by the children, so start designing your boats now. There will be awards for the fastest, scariest, prettiest, longest floater and others. It's always fun to see how creative the kids are and how far the boats will race. In years past, a few quickly slipped past any stops and floated away, so be prepared to attach yours with a string if you want to keep it or be ready to jump in. In addition, we'll have plenty of other fun crafts and activities for the kids. There is also a miniature land version dragonboat for the kids to ride on created by our very clever Eileen and Craig PontBriant. Be sure to bring the camera.

We'll picnic together, so bring a dish for your family to also and also share with everyone. We have some creative cooks in the group, and the food is always delicious. FCC will provide water, lemonade, ice, plates, and eating utensils.

June 27, 2009 -
Knoxville Dragon Boat Races*

8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Approximate start and end time
All Day Activities The Cove in Farragut

And in June the big boats race. On Saturday, June 27, the Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries will hold its annual Dragonboat races to raise money for their mission.

This year, as we did last year, FCC will help KARM by manning the Asian Culture Center. We had more than 30 parents and kids volunteer and help last year. It is a lot of fun and a great way for our older children to give back to the community while showing their pride in their Chinese heritage. We'll need volunteers for this year's event. Your family can sign up for a one-hour volunteer slot. It is Saturday, June 27, at the Cove. Please think about coming out--all you have to do is sit in the shade for an hour and hand out crafts for the kids to do. For more information, contact Bonnie Schmidt at bons84@yahoo.com or 681-6173.

The day is filled with more than 25 heats of racing-groups came in last year from Chattanooga and North Carolina just to race. There is also live music, performances by the Organization for Chinese Americans, and a Children's Fun Zone with inflatables. The Cove also has that wonderful beach and water area, so don't forget your swimming suits and buckets for sand castles.

It's a fun (and usually HOT) day. Full details and directions are on this website http://knox.racedragonboats.com
